[Hong Kong Cuisine] ‘Keung Kee’ at MTR Causeway Bay Station: Michelin-recommended sticky rice and fried rice rolls

‘Keung Kee Delicacies’ specialises in Hong Kong street food and is one of the most well-known, down-to-earth eateries in the area; it started out as a mobile food stall before gradually moving into a shopfront. Unlike many other establishments that have been unable to cope with sky-high rents and have chosen to relocate or simply close down, Qiang Ji Delicacies has managed to weather the storm. Although the premises are small—with space for only a dozen or so customers—and the menu features just a handful of snacks, it still attracts many locals every evening. In addition to glutinous rice with cured meats and congee, it also serves sweet soups and other late-night snacks.
At first glance, Keung Kee appears no different from other small eateries, but the food here is a world apart from that served elsewhere. The fish balls, rice rolls, pork skin, fried noodles, glutinous rice with cured meats are all highly recommended. The portions are generous and the ingredients are fresh, made daily. My personal favourites at Qiang Ji are the glutinous rice with cured meats and the pork skin with radish; The glutinous rice is steamed rather than stir-fried, allowing the essence of the dried prawns and cured pork to infuse into the rice, elevating the flavour to a whole new level – it’s absolutely delicious. Then there’s the creamy pork bone congee, packed with large chunks of succulent pork bone that are wonderfully fragrant. The dried oysters (which Hong Kongers often call ‘oyster shit’) are bursting with umami, whilst the preserved eggs and peanuts are perfectly cooked and have blended seamlessly into the congee base – the flavour is simply superb.
However, please bear in mind that the shop may close for a break at irregular intervals, so if you don’t want to make a wasted trip, do remember to ring ahead to check.
