The "Beekeeper's Bee Picking Museum" is the second tourist factory we visited during our trip to Yilan, and it is also a good free tourist attraction. As we drove along Yuanshan Road, we saw a big yellow house full of European style, which is the destination I am going to introduce.
Firstly, we entered the first area, which mainly introduces some habits of bees and the knowledge and culture of beekeeping, and teaches how to distinguish real honey and so on. The exhibition hall also displayed some specimens and hives of different types of bees. The most impressive one was a 150cm diameter and 170cm high black-velvet tiger-head hive, which originally housed about 40,000 black-velvet tiger-head bees, a common species in Taiwan, which is a little bit scary to imagine!
To calm my nerves, I took a break at the Honey Cafe and ordered a creamy Beehive Ice Cream with a piece of beeswax on top, as well as other light snacks such as sandwiches, muffins and coffee. Other tourists were seen ordering a pot of "honey jujube tea", which was served in a cute bee-shaped tea set.
Honey has so many benefits, such as soothing coughs and throats, aiding digestion, lowering cholesterol, etc., and is so sweet in flavour that you sometimes buy some of these products to eat. In the souvenir section, you can buy some real honey and other by-products to take home, and try different flavours of honey. They also sell the lovely cutlery that we just used at the cafe.
There are also some children's play equipment and a pay-per-view train in the courtyard. If you book in advance, you can also join the Bee Live Show, where you can get up close and personal with the bees and taste the freshest honey and beeswax.
