Every year around March to the end of May is the season when the calla lilies bloom in Bamboo Lake in Taiwan, and when a group of friends and I came to the vicinity of Yangmingshan, of course, we couldn't miss the opportunity to make a pilgrimage.
"The Birthplace of Pongrai Rice".
On the way into the flower fields, I was already excited to see the green mountains and the sea of flowers in the distance. I later learnt that the area was once terraced rice fields, but due to overproduction, it was transformed into a popular spot for picking sea yucca today.
We finally arrived at the 12-hectare "Cai Fu Calla Lily Field". The field was founded by the first owner, Mr Cai-Fu Lu, and is now run and promoted by his son, Chi-ming Lu, and his daughter, Pin-Fang Lu, and her children.
"Going Flower Picking in a Frog Costume."
The entrance fee is only NT$100, which means it is only about HK$$25, and you can go down to the flower field to pick flowers. But first, you have to put on a frog costume, what's that? What is this? Do I have to ”cosplay” as a frog before I can pick flowers? In the end, it turned out to be just a green waterproof workman's suit, but the children's "frog suit" was also fitted with a frog-shaped hat, making them look like little frogs, which was really cute!
Although it was very foggy that day, it created a fairyland-like atmosphere. That day, a couple was picking flowers in a sea of white and green flowers, which was both romantic and beautiful.
"Rest in the Frog Hut
If you're tired of picking flowers, you can take a break at the sitting area decorated with frogs and dolls, and have some snacks and drinks. There are also some snacks and tableware in the shape of calla lilies that you can buy at home. I always buy a postcard to send home as a souvenir every time I go travelling, and all the postcards are beautifully photographed by the owner of the farm.
"A Field of Flowers for Four Generations.
I took a break to chat with the owner of the farm. It turns out that white calla lilies used to be called "dead man's flower" by the Taiwanese, and it was not until twenty years ago that the rise of white weddings changed people's views and became widely accepted. It takes three years to grow a calla lily before it is suitable for picking. Mr Lu urged us to take good care of the flowers, to pick the ones we like and not to throw them away, because each flower is the work of four generations of people!

Don't worry if you don't get to see the calla lilies, the colourful hydrangeas will be in full bloom in the summer to welcome you.
