If you’re looking for a Hong Kong-style café, everyone thinks of the ‘Australian Milk Company’ at Jordan Station; I myself often make the trip all the way out here just for a quick bite or a Hong Kong-style breakfast. The fragrant, silky-smooth scrambled eggs at ‘Australian Milk Company’ are arguably a must-try for any visitor to Hong Kong. To be honest, when compared to the variety of dishes on offer at other Hong Kong tea restaurants, the selection at ‘Australian Milk Company’ is certainly not extensive; in fact, it’s rather limited and nothing out of the ordinary. Yet people come to ‘Australian Milk Company’ for just one thing…
Scrambled eggs – hardly anyone eats anything else on the menu; anyone who does must be visiting for the first time and hasn’t done their research properly. The meal options at ‘Ao Niu’ are straightforward: fast food is available all day, breakfast is served in the morning, and high tea is available from lunchtime through to the evening. To put it simply, there are two meal options available during each of these two time slots, and in each case, the focus is on the scrambled eggs.
‘Menu Options’
Fast food (available all day)
‘Australian Milk Company’ serves ‘breakfast’ all day long, consisting of fried eggs, toast and milk. You can choose between fried or scrambled eggs, but the whole point of coming to ‘Australian Milk Company’ is to try their famously fragrant, silky-smooth and succulent scrambled eggs, so the choice is a non-starter – ordering ‘scrambled eggs’ is a given! !!
Breakfast (served before 12 noon)
If you find the portion size insufficient, there’s a ‘breakfast’ option available before 12 noon, which includes toast, a fried egg, ham and macaroni, and a cup of ‘coffee or tea’. Similarly, ordering scrambled eggs is a must; simply ask the waiter to swap it for scrambled eggs – anyone who doesn’t would be a bit odd.
It’s also standard practice to serve macaroni here; when the place is busy, the stock turns over quickly, so the macaroni stays fresher and retains its bite. They won’t necessarily swap your pasta for macaroni during breakfast hours, and the pasta on offer is rather ordinary—nothing out of the ordinary. So it’s best to just stick with the excellent macaroni. ‘Ao Niu’ doesn’t offer instant noodles or rice noodles as alternatives either.
The ‘tea’ referred to here in the phrase ‘coffee or tea’ actually means hot ‘Hong Kong-style milk tea’, meaning you can choose between hot coffee and hot milk tea. However, in Hong Kong’s tea restaurants, there is oneUnwritten rules… In fact, you can also choose other drinks besides these two, such as the hot Holick, Ho Wah Tin, lemon tea and lemonade that Hong Kong people often drink… If you’d like them served chilled, simply add HK$2.
Tea and Breakfast (12 noon to evening)
If you pop into ‘Australian Milk Company’ for lunch, you can opt for the ‘tea set’, which most people order. It includes a plate of ‘char siu soup pasta’; you can swap the soup pasta for macaroni, and the staff are more than happy to make this change during the tea set service. In fact, macaroni is the more popular choice—it’s fresh, springy and tastes even better. The other dish included in the ‘tea set’ features a fried egg, ham and buttered toast. Similarly, swapping the fried egg for a scrambled one is a given; in fact, the staff might even think you don’t know what you’re doing if you don’t make the change. As for the ‘coffee or tea’ at the end, the same applies: you can swap it!

A final tip: many people say that the service at ‘Australian Milk Company’ is very poor. I don’t entirely agree with this, and I think it’s something that can be avoided. Here are a few things to bear in mind:

Before you go in, you should know that ‘Ao Niu’ is famous for its scrambled eggs, so don’t try ordering a fried egg—the staff will think you’re unaware of the restaurant’s speciality, that you don’t know what you’re eating and that you’re being disrespectful. So, make sure you order scrambled eggs! Scrambled eggs! Scrambled eggs!
(2) Drinks to follow
As there is limited space on the table—once the noodle soup and scrambled eggs have been placed there, there’s no room left—the waiter will only ask you to order a drink once you’ve nearly finished your meal. Under no circumstances should you order a drink when you’re ordering your food, as this would once again show that you don’t know the ropes.
