As well as Hong Kong’s famous snacks, egg tarts, milk tea, pineapple buns and the like; claypot rice has also been a staple in the lives of countless Hong Kongers as they grew up, and is one of the signature dishes of Hong Kong-style cafés, brimming with authentic local flavour. Whenever claypot rice comes to mind, Wing Shing Hei Café is always on my list of choices. Their most famous dish, the beef claypot rice with poached egg, is my absolute favourite. As all the claypot rice dishes here are made to order, the waiting time is quite long, but for such a delicious meal, it’s well worth the wait.
As soon as you lift the lid, crack a raw egg onto the rich, fragrant beef, mix the two together, then replace the lid and wait a moment for the heat to cook the egg through. The perfectly separate grains of rice, paired with the pre-seasoned beef and the crispy rice crust at the bottom—which is the real highlight—make for a truly unforgettable dish. I highly recommend it.
